01.25.2012 A Fling with an Old Flame...

He's dashing, dark and handsome.

It's amazing I hadn't fallen under his spell for so long --

But then again he's been on a shelf in the back of a dusty closet for about five years.  Out of sight, far out of mind.

This zippy little cutter started out as a demonstration piece at a live show, seriously, about five years ago.  Maybe longer.  I took him as far as I could and then got frustrated with him.  So he got shelved.

Last Saturday, my sculpting buddy Leslie Tengelsen came over to hang out and work on one of her sculptures, and she gifted me with an issue of a stock horse magazine.  Seeing the cool cutting horse pictures in it made me think of this little guy.  I dusted him off (aahhcooooo!).  I tweaked his pose just a snidge.  And the romance was rekindled!

Ah, but I feel so guilty, like I'm cheating on Vata!  Mr. ChaCha must be put aside once more (poor guy's going to get a complex).

I wonder if any of my artist friends out there have ever had similar such, um, dalliances and flirtations?

I'm guilty - his name is Jasper and.....

.....he's currently living in a Really Useful Box made to fit him, where he has spent much of the seven years of his creation. I've accepted that I don't have the understand yet to complete him in such a subtly complicated pose. I'm hoping to revisit him in the Spring/Summer, but can't guarantee he'll not have to go back in his R.U.B for another while :o(

Thank you for the inspiration (and justification) Lynn, as always your post is a creative boost, as intriguing and delightful as I've come to expect!

Oh whew! I'm not the only one! Thanks Kelly!! Oooooo... Seven years I get that one. My closet has some that old in there too! Well I hope you catch a seven-year-itch and get to spend some time this year with your "Old Flame", Jasper.

Oh, how fun, Lynn, to find this little guy and be inspired to work on him again! It will be interesting to see how he turns out based on your current sculpting methods and style.

I had a pastel painting of Mesa Verde that I started in college that got shelved for years. Towards the end of medical school, I pulled it out and finished it. It went on to win a Best in Show award at the county fair in Flagstaff, and now hangs in my sister's house.

Now, I have a small stack of unfinished plein air and studio paintings that hopefully I'll be re-inspired to finish one day.

I too have several in progress sculptures in my closet. They get to about 80% finished and then I either get bored, or am stuck on something that I can't figure out. So into the closet they go to age like fine wine :)

Thanks for stopping by Sonya and Sarah. It's comforting to hear that colleagues whom I admire also get "stuck". :-)

I love the analogy to fine wine Sarah!

NMhorsechick -- I hope the cutter will be next, but I might run into something I can't figure out. Happens a lot.
