04.22.11 Special for BOYCC, Part 1

Here we are barely a month away from what I think will be the premier event for clinky collectors all year -- the Bring Out Your Chinas Convention, May 19 - 22, in San Marcos, California.

And though I won't be able to attend this year (surgery that week if all goes according to schedule) I have been working on special one-of-a-kind sculptures for the event.  Two reliefs for the Fraley collectors' challenge and a third relief to support the event itself.

Each was carved out of a thick slab of earthenware clay, allowed to dry to leather hard, then flipped over and hollowed out on the back to as consistent a thickness as I could manage.

Now they need to dry out evenly to prevent warping and cracking which of course presents a whole new set of technical challenges.  Primarily, a protected, humidity controlled environment.  More about that in the next blog post.

By the way, these are not little medallions -- think salad plate size.

Here are the other two reliefs, not yet titled.  I'd love to hear your suggestions!

04.18.11 Guest Artist -- Michelle Platt

Boise Bound by Michelle Platt

We have several guests in the studio now which is always great fun!

Though I would love to have the artists here in person, it is the works of several very talented artists who have entrusted their sculptures to Barry for molding and casting.  We certainly think of their sculptures as honored guests just as surely as if the artists were here themselves.

With their permission, I love to share glimpses of these visual treats with you.

Today I want you to see this vibrant draft horse by Michelle Platt. She titled him "Boise Bound" and I have to say I'm very partial to this fellow -- he was started while Michelle was here in Boise for last year's "Wire to Whinny" workshop, and then he got to come back for molding and casting.  Thanks Michelle!
