09.21.10 Utah State Fair -- Field Trip Fun

You know how I love a road trip!  We traveled down to Salt Lake City for a bit of research last week, the Utah State Fair had a nice light breed show that featured some breeds that we don't see so often at home.

Spotted Saddle Horses; a striking extreme sabino in the Spotted Saddle Horse English two-gait class.  The half mask was the only color on this horse.

A dynamic Half Arabian (I assume the other half was an ASB in this case) in the English Show Hack class.

A Tennessee Walking Horse in the Plantation Western three-gait class.

Another Half Arab in the Open Hunter Pleasure class (love this dappled gray tobiano pattern).

Finally, an elegant entry in the Half Arabian Country Pleasure class.

By this time we were hungry for lunch and headed back over to the Red Iguana, named Best Mexican Restaurant many times over -- and for good reason, their fabulous array of house made molé sauces.  We manged to stop in to feast there twice in a mere 24 hours.

As an extra-special treat we squeezed in an evening at the State Room where Tab Benoit put on a memorable show.  If you like blues guitar, check him out.

I have to admit that for the last fifteen years I have viewed the Salt Lake City metro area as a sort of traffic Purgatory which had to be endured in order to get to where we were really going.  This trip down... well, there were no huge road construction projects, we stayed right downtown, found great places to eat and drink (trust me, this has been an issue in the past!), beautiful horses to watch and nice people to talk to.  I'll be darned -- the place is growing on me.

I interviewed Tab a few years back for the local 'zine. Great guy, great music. Gorgeous horses as well!

I confess to a bit of envy Laura. Was Tab involved with preservation efforts for Louisiana coastal wetlands at that point? He's doing great work with his Voice of the Wetlands projects.
